The War in
Europe
by ColletteWWII in Europe began many years before the United States declared war on the Axis powers. The taking of the Sudetenland and the invasion of Poland in September of 1939, pulled England, France, and Russia into the fray. After France fell to the Germans, the only country left between Germany and the United States was England. All of Europe was effectively controlled by Hitler’s Third Reich.
America did not directly enter the war on the European continent, but invaded Northern Africa, Sicily and Italy to cut off oil supplies to the Axis powers. The United States oversaw Operation Overlord and the largest amphibious invasion in history on June 6, 1944. The war was a two front war with Russia holding the Eastern Front while the remaining allies kept the Germans engaged on the Western Front.
